Repainted a '59 oil painting over church's baptismal; it dried 'crackled'. How do I correct?

Reasons for an oil painting to crackle;

- The top layer (either paint or varnish) has dried faster than the layer beneath - was the painting varnished before the paint was completely cured? Or a lean (no oil) layer was painted over a fat (oil-rich) layer which dried faster than the underpainting?

- The painting was painted over a non-absorbent ground such as a varnished or acrylic substrate, thus the paint has not adhered properly to the substrate.

- The wrong varnish was used (acrylic or polyurathane varnish over oil would do this, especially if the oil paint was not cured).

In any case, this cannot be corrected except in the case of improper varnish; assuming you know what varnish was used, the varnish could be removed with the solvent used to thin the varnish. This may damage the painting beneath, so not really recommended unless done by a conservator.

Sorry for the bad news...

How do I refinish a wooden door with crackling (alligator-hide)damage from the weather. Stained, not painted.

Wooden door was never properly sealed and has developed fading and crackling. Want to know how to fill and what finishing coat to use over the stain. How do I refinish a wooden door with crackling (alligator-hide)damage from the weather. Stained, not painted.
You could possibly start with a stain stripper to get the stain off, then lots of sanding. Lots. Then re-stain the door and use several coats of rub-on/wipe-on polyurethane. Minwax makes a good wipe-on polyurethane in several different finishes, satin, semi, and high gloss, and since it's wipe on...no brush marks. Your door will then be sealed properly. How do I refinish a wooden door with crackling (alligator-hide)damage from the weather. Stained, not painted.

  • How do i fix my crackled paint?

I have painted part of my hallway in the Dulux light and space paint but didn't prepare properly as i was painting over a shiny (possibly satin) paint and now the paint has crackled. The first coat was fine but its happened as i've put the 2nd coat one.

So how do i rectify that problem and also what do i need to do to prepare the bits i haven't yet done. The ceilings are 12 ft up over the stairs so not sure how i could sand all the way to the top - have been using paintbrush strapped to a pole!!!How do i fix my crackled paint?
By the sound of it you have put the second coat on to soon. If the first coat was fine (dry to the touch) it might not have cured properly. When applying a second coat over paint that has not dried properly the paint can crocodile ( have a wrinkled appearance). You need to let that harden then sand out. As for the unpainted parts of the wall give a good sanding to remove gloss and then paint.

What's the best way to repair sagging crackle paint on wall?

For any experienced painters, I attempted the crackle effect on walls of a bedroom. 90% of it looks great, but in some areas the top coat sagged causing raised areas and smeared blue look over the cream under coat. What's the best way to fix this in the affected areas?

Thanks to anyone for your help. I don't want to screw up the whole wall. What's the best way to repair sagging crackle paint on wall?
It depends if the areas are hard enough to sand smooth without ripping up the wall.If so you might skim areas with drywall mud a couple times to smooth.eiather way your proplems gonna be how to touch up those ares youve smoothed without them standing out like a sore thumb.its hard enough to t.u. in middle of a wall without it showing using regular paint ,but with a finish of your type its very hard to accomplish this .you mighht have to repaint from corner to corner after repair.good luckWhat's the best way to repair sagging crackle paint on wall?
You can sand the effected area spot in with your base color then follow steps 2 %26amp; 3 I recently completed a project one area got away from me .I saned the area down spotted in with my base coat then put my crackle on then top coat blended in nicely good luck

    Crackle paint?

Can you use crackle paint on bathroom walls?Crackle paint?
Yes, but you need to put a poly. sealer on it or it will not wear well. I did this in my kitchen. The sealer brings out the depth in the faux wall. They should sell the proper sealer next to the faux supplies at the hardware store. Also you will need to work in small sections that are randomly sized and try not to overlap.

How do I get a nice crackle laquer finish on an oil painting that I just completed? (still wet)?

let it dry completely. then do a few washes of linsead oil....i think that will do it....try it first on a sample.....

How to get the effect of crackled paint?????

how can i get the effect of crackled paint without having to buy the expensive crackled paint from the store? How to get the effect of crackled paint?????
paint a dark undercoat,{latex, semi-gloss is best... this can be blue or brown or black or the original colour. This will be what shows through the cracks. allow this to dry overnight. Then get some white glue, any type will do, mix in some water to make it spreadable and cover the dark coat. let it dry a few hours, then cover the glue with a thick coat of white paint/ It will immediately begin to separate. You can finish with a coat of urethane to protect it. {I hope I have the sequence right...do a test patch, the glue might be on top of the second coat.}How to get the effect of crackled paint?????

What is the name of that process/paint that CRACKLES and makes PAINT look old?

That's an easy one....it's called a crackle finish! What is the name of that process/paint that CRACKLES and makes PAINT look old?
Check this out...you can even download the brochure to read up on it!What is the name of that process/paint that CRACKLES and makes PAINT look old?
The others are correct - it's either called crackle or craze and Decoart do a good crackle medium.
You can get crackle finish in craft stores.
Crazed-finish or Crackle-finish... That Sherwin-Williams link is great.

You can also do it by using a coat of Elmer's white glue or Liquitex Matte Medium over the bottom-coat, allow an hour or two to dry, paint the over-coat, and then use a heat-gun or hair dryer to ';over-accelerate'; the drying process. That will crackle the finish.

ALWAYS PRACTICE on a bit of similar material before you do it on your final product.

    GOOD LUCK

Will crackle base designed for acrylic paint work with melamine oil paint?

I bought Debbie Travis's crackle base and a premium quality melamine oil paint to do a crackle effect on my dresser. But once I got the products home, I realized the crackle effect was designed for acrylic paint, not oil paint. It was the only crackle base I could find after searching ten stores. And the oil paint was very expensive and nonrefundable. So I am hoping I can get these two products to cooperate... and crackle!

If anyone knows if it will work fine or if there is something I can do to make melamine oil paint crackle, please let me know! Will crackle base designed for acrylic paint work with melamine oil paint?
Unfortunately, the two types of coatings are incompatible. I have been successful getting the oil based melamine to crackle though. Put a heavy coat on in one direction. Before it cures and dries all of the way, put a second heavy coat on in the opposite direction. Let that dry and as it does, viola, it will crackle because the paint underneath shrinks as it dries. But, for durability, you need to seal if AFTER it is fully cured and you can test this in an inconspicuous place by taking your thumbnail and pressing it into the paint. When it no longer leaves an indentation, you can safely seal it.Will crackle base designed for acrylic paint work with melamine oil paint?
Thank you, I will try the opposite direction trick!

    Crackle Painting (prepping procedure options)?

I am redoing a dresser with a heavy coat of yellow enamel paint on it. I will be using a red flat paint for the base, then crackle medium. The final coat will be a ivory satin finish. How much sanding or stripping or what's the easiest way to get rid of this bright butter yellow enamel thick paint??? Ugh.Crackle Painting (prepping procedure options)?
If you want the best finish, the prep is important. Strip the old paint with SoyGel stripper. It is almost odorless, works very well and is easy to work with. Let it penetrate the old paint then remove the whole mess with a putty knife, fine steel wool and sand paper. You remove any residue with water and let the piece dry thoroughly. Give it a light sanding and then start your painting.

It should look great when its finished!Crackle Painting (prepping procedure options)?
Sand with a very rough sand paper, also use a spatula and try a scrape some away, also you can use an electrical sander, but go light with it! Hope that helps!

  • How do I mix a color wash to paint transparent detail over crackle paint?

I am trying to paint a dresser to match a bed I bought at Posh Tots, but don't know how to mix the pastel paints done over the crackle. Check out a picture of the look I'm going for here...

There are quite a few colors I would like to use when painting the detail, so I was hoping to just mix some from my collection of acrylic tube paints. Is this possible?

Should I put a sealer over the crackle paint before doing the color wash? If not, will the color wash crackle too?

Thanks so much for your help!

LacyHow do I mix a color wash to paint transparent detail over crackle paint?
I would check with some of the good home paint stores in your area because the products that created that bed finish areformulated to work together and to get the same effect with paints that are not preformulated would be lucky at best. I have been trying to find a topcoat that I can paint on my Oil paintings and so far have not had good luck. I used to paint furniture with a cracle laquer finish and I know that with out the formulated paints and good timing it is diffficult to achieve a good crackle finish.

Paint on drywall crackling like alligator skin?

We recently painted the drywall in our future nursery. The paint is now cracking and looks like reptile skin. The primer and topcoats are compatible, we think we did not let the first coat dry before we painted the next. The crackling is getting worse everyday. We have tried to add another coat but the cracks still come through. What can we do to fix the paint on drywall? Do we strip or sand then repaint?Paint on drywall crackling like alligator skin?
Some people pay lots of money for a custom finish like that. If you don't want to go to the trouble of scraping and sanding, then put a thick coat of clear varnish on it and say it was on purpose.Paint on drywall crackling like alligator skin?
just get a paint scraper and scrape the wall it should take off all the lose paint go over it with some sandpaper just to smooth it a little and repaint make sure when you paint that the weather is right for painting.the tempeture should be at least 40 deg fahrenheit and the less humid the better.it may have been caused by applying the second coat too soon ,but I'm wandering was it real cold when you painted the room or raining outside?either way do that and it should be fine
Do what drizzit said and also be sure not to apply the paint too thickly. Several thinner coats, drying well in between, will prevent problems like this. Good luck.

How do I paint over crackle finish in my bathroom?

I don't know if this belongs on walls, but my entire 8x5 bathroom is crackle finished and I want to paint over it. So far, I've sanded off the rough edges, but didn't sand the wall smooth. Then I applied 3 coats of ';no sand'; latex primer. The problem is you can still feel and see the texture underneath the primer. I bought 3 palm sanders and 60 grit sand paper, but I'm not strong enough to use any of them efficiently.

So, is there an alternative to sanding or is an electric sander ok to use? Won't it eat into the drywall? Should I spackle the walls instead of sanding? Paint stripper? Help. How do I paint over crackle finish in my bathroom?
I'd just get some drywall mud and smooth over it...then, you can ';wet sand'; when it's dry with a damp cloth or old piece of t shirt. Keep rinsing whatever you use, get a bucket of clean water.

Don't press too hard when you're sanding it, or you'll make more ridges.

Before you ';sand';, scrape down any ridges with you're drywall thingy (trowel?).

You can make it smooth as glass like that. How do I paint over crackle finish in my bathroom?
You might want to strip off the latex primer, get down as far as possible to the crackle finish.

You'll want to sand the walls smooth. You can use an electric hand sander (random orbital) but do not use a belt sander (too aggressive). Of course be careful with the electric sander.. keep it moving never staying in one spot to long.

after you sand smooth look for a heavy base primer before you paint.
Maybe buy a paint stripper that you paint on and wait for the surface to bubble and then scrap away. After that you will still have to sand a bit to make sure your walls are really smooth. Just did this in my bathroom. The first time they weren't smooth enough and everything showed thru the primer and paint. Had to re-do everything.
think backwards on this one. Dont remove..Fill in. Get some waterproof plaster or sheetrock mud and trowel it on and then trowel it off smooth. A quick sand after it dries and you might be okay.
Why not apply a heavy stipple, then the rough edges/tips can be sanded off with a palm sander.

  • Crackle Painting- How to?

I have tried the Sherwin Williams Crackle Medium and it is proving to be very difficult. I tried it with a 2 inch brush, but it did not look good at all. I also tried a roller, but it was difficult to completely cover the area evenly. Does anyone have any ideas on how to make this work and cover evenly? I want deep long cracks.

Thanks for helping in advance!Crackle Painting- How to?
The thickness of the paint application will give you deeper cracks. The thicker the paint, the wider the cracks. Also, you can only apply the paint in one direction, one time for the medium to work. Another words, you have a one shot deal and cannot go over or change the direction of the top coat. You have to load the applicator with a lot of paint, go one direction only and don't try to stretch the paint. I find sponge applicators, whether the brush type or the roller type can be saturated with enough paint to get the effect to look good. But, when using the roller, you only get 1-2 complete turns of the roller before you have to reload it with paint.

    Easy to understand and follow Faux paint finishing ';how to crackle finish';

I've been all over the internet to find instructions. Has anyone done it, and how did you do it, step by step? I only plan on doing this on our ceiling. I just would like step by step instructions that are easy to understand and easy to follow.

    Please no links to different sites unless you've used the instructions yourself and had a great outcome. ThanksEasy to understand and follow Faux paint finishing ';how to crackle finish';
Here are the basic instructions for crackle finishing -

The waiting time is the hardest thing about it - but please allow time for drying - very important

    Step 1.

Using a stir stick, thoroughly stir the paint chosen for the base color (Flat, Flat Enamel, Eggshell Enamel or Satin Enamel).

    TIP

We recommend you use a practice board to preview your technique and color combination before beginning your project.

    Step 2.

Using a brush or a roller, apply the base-color onto the project.

    Step 3.

Ensure that the base-color has dried a minimum of 4 hours.

    Step 4.

Apply an even coat of Crackle liberally to the surface using a brush or a roller.

    TIP

How the Crackle is applied will affect how the top coat will crack. If the Crackle was brushed, the cracks will follow the direction in which it was brushed. If the Crackle was rolled, it will achieve a more uniform effect.

    Step 5.

Allow Crackle to dry a minimum of 1 hour, no longer than 7 days.

    TIP

It is possible to wait as long as one week before top-coating the Crackle.

    Step 6.

Using a stir stick, thoroughly stir the paint chosen for the top-coat (Flat).

    TIP

For the best Crackle effect, use a Flat top-coat.

    Step 7.

Apply the top-coat using a brush or a roller using as few strokes as possible.

    TIP

For small cracks, apply a thin amount of the top-coat, for larger cracks, apply a heavier amount of the top-coat. The method used for applying the top-coat will affect the final look of the Crackle.

    Step 8.

Allow to dry approximately 24 hours.

Can I apply crackle medium straight onto the bare wood? Then paint over it. I dont have enough paint under.?

I only have enough paint to do one layer of crackle medium, then one layer of desired colour. I just want the color with a bit of crackle to it. I'm doing a little table. Any advice appreciated :)Can I apply crackle medium straight onto the bare wood? Then paint over it. I dont have enough paint under.?
No, you need to either gesso the table first to seal it, for wood is porous. Whatever the paint you put it on, it would be soaked right in and not be shown well. Or you need to put a layer of paint on it first. Anyway just to seal the porous surface.

Can crackling/chipping paint be a sign of a bad roof replacement job?

The paint inside different areas of the house is crackling and chipping; whether painted recently or years ago. Not sure why, and the only thing that comes to mind is the roof was replaced the summer before last. Can crackling/chipping paint be a sign of a bad roof replacement job?
probaly a bad paint job or like clayton said the moisture from the previos roof has finally dried out (because ur roof is good now) which would make the paint crack and peel. e.g. if ur skin lacks moisture it will crack and peel right? so i would say its proof your roof is good. many layers of paint + moisture for a extended time + new roof(lack of moisture) = cracked %26amp; peeling paint. Can crackling/chipping paint be a sign of a bad roof replacement job?
It means previous moisture. It may be just drying out now from moisture before your roof job.If you have a bad roof it would be wet in places when it rains. This also soulds like you need better insulation!

Previous owner of our house crackle painted the cabinets-is there a way to cover up without sanding/striping?

OUCH! I would definately strip...take the doors down mark them so you remember where they came from and strip them. Otherwise you will be sanding forever, exspecially if they used the overcoat.

If the cabinets have decorative edging...the dremel tool works wonders!Previous owner of our house crackle painted the cabinets-is there a way to cover up without sanding/striping?
Looks like you have to strip them or replace with new ones. Striping is a lot of work. I know of no tool that would make the job easier, belt sanders plug up with paint, rotary sanding discs leave swirl marks. If you don't have a lot of cabinets, there are inexpensive ones on the market, that when put together correctly look quite nice. Sometimes what seems like a lot of money up front, pays off down the road.Previous owner of our house crackle painted the cabinets-is there a way to cover up without sanding/striping?
no way to just go over that

you are going to have to put some work in to it

unless you want them to look worse............thicker and cracklier
I wouldn't recommend painting over a crackle finish. It would be better, though a lot more work, to strip the paint down to the wood, sand the wood lightly, then prime coat it and repaint the cabinets with two finish coats of enamel, or stained and varnish them after the sanding.
No way. Sorry but your going to have to break down and do it.

How can I refinish a wooden table? Is crackle-paint worth the time it takes to complete it?

I purchased a wooden coffee table for $5 this weekend and I believe it may have been in a child's room as it has a few pen scribbles and some (minor) grooves in the surface. It currently appears to be raw wood. I'd like to make it look at least somewhat aesthetically pleasing. :)

I have not decided whether or not I鈥檇 like to simply stain it or paint it. I am curious to know if any of you have attempted to use crackle paint. If so, please share your method, tips and/or tricks. I believe I have the general procedure jotted down but I was told the paint will remain 鈥榬ough鈥?and possibly rub off onto items placed onto it (i.e. book/magazine). Did you find that to be true?

I am fond of polyurethane (clear coat) finishes. You can still stain/pain underneath, but the poly basically gives you a hard 'plastic' surface that's easy to clean and easily repaired if it gets scarred or scratched while at the same time protecting the wood or finish beneath. You can use several coats if you want a thicker finish.

How can I create a crackle paint texture on the surface of a mirror?

I have some centerpiece mirrors that I would like to make more ';antique-looking'; by creating a gold (or maybe black) crackle finish on their surfaces. I've seen a lot of crackle paint products online and in craft stores, but I have a couple of concerns about the execution of my idea. (I need them for my wedding this weekend, so I’m running out of time to experiment!)

Question #1: Are any of these products meant to be used on glass? I am worried the paint might chip or peel off too easily.

Question #2: The examples of crackle paint I have seen in the past have always involved covering an entire surface with a base layer and then adding a “crackle” layer on top of it. How can I create a crackle texture without covering up very much of the mirror’s original surface? (I guess you could say that I’m trying to paint the cracks in the paint, rather than the cracked paint itself… so perhaps using crackle paint isn’t the best solution here.)

Because of time constraints, I can’t really order any specialty items online, so I’m definitely hoping to find a solution that is available at a local craft or hardware store.

I am open to any ideas, or alternative suggestions you may have!

    Thank you.

The people at the paint departments in each of those hardware stores are very good with questions such as yours. (Look for someone older to ask or someone who ISN'T wearing clean clothes. It means they actually do something) ;)

The best way to take of paint is with 80 grit sand paper followed by 150 grit, 250, and finally 400/500. (It's really simple stuff. The people at the place where you purchase these materials will be very knowledgeable)HELP!!!!!!!! Crackle paint????????
well, i know nothing of this sort, but for my baby room i decided to redo a dresser that was finished and everything. i put this stuff on before i painted it and even tho the dresser was finished it was the perfect primer for me to just paint over- no sanding or anything. it was called bulls eye 123 and u just paint over it once it dries.

When you use a crackle finish on wood does it matter if you use a flat or satin paint?

That really depends on which product you are using. I highly recommend flat. We use flat and it seems to crackle better because it has better porosity than satin or gloss. Check with the manufacturer of your product too, see what they recommend. There should be instructions on your product packaging.

Alot of people pay good money for crackly things. Some even pay better money to have the crackly things repaired. Does your trim have multiple coats of paint? What you may be seeing is what's called an alligator effect. Usually a stripper and sanding are required to remedy the situation. If ya think it's due to high moisture (paint tends to come off in flakes, etc.--not sticking) you may just scrape, sand and prime.
liquid paint remover and then a li9l bit of water wit that it will work
Do you know if your walls are drywall or plaster?

If it were me, I'd sand it down with a high-grit sandpaper....though you're going to have to repaint. Make sure you use a good primer and then paint.

Cracking is typical of plaster walls. You could go an artsy faux finish, then the crackles would look like they're desired.

    Help with crackle paint!?

I followed the directions and I am having major problems with this technique. I am painting one wall in our bedroom. I am having problems with blending the top coat evenly. I have tried doing long brushstrokes, but you can see each section where I have stopped and started again. It is impossible to do one long paint stroke from top to bottom of my wall. I also miss tiny sections of the wall and then cannot go back to put paint on them because it takes off the crackling paint on sections I have already painted. This is a mess and very difficult. I love the look though (when it鈥檚 done right). Any tips would be so helpful!!!Help with crackle paint!?
try using a roller for the top coat and remember it don't have to be perfect that's the idea behind and yes try to use one long stroke if you alter the strokes first stroke start at the top second start at the bottom never over lap or try to go back just leave the spots you miss also try it on an old board to get to hang of it before doing the wallHelp with crackle paint!?
have you thought of using a small roller. you will be able to work faster and more evenly with roller.

    How to crackle paint...?

I brought some red plastic chargers from the holiday section of Wal-Mart and I want to crackle paint them using a bronze color so that there are red veins running through the bronze. How do I do this? How to crackle paint...?
Surprisingly crackle paint can be bought. I obtained some in an artist's supply store. How to crackle paint...?
being that you have your base colour already you simply apply the crackle then apply your bronze colour over it and your crackle will appear. just read the can from the crackle and it will explain it. you might want to apply a urethane over top for protection but do not apply a water based urethane or it will crackle also.

I am wanting to know if you can mix crackle medium and paint and have it work successfully.

I am making beads and want to crackle them, I am finding it hard to coat them with the crackle and then paint over them because it's such a small space, and I keep messing it up.

It would be nice if I could mix the crackle and the paint, so I only had to go over the bead once... is that possible? Can you mix crackle medium and paint?
Unfortunately, it doesn't work. The crackle medium activates with the acrylic or latex paint being applied over it because it is a chemical reaction. I've tried it on a few surfaces and it never worked. Can you mix crackle medium and paint?

How do I make homemade paint crackle glaze from white glue?

You can make it with white glue. I would try mixing half with water, brush it on a sample, let it dry for about 30 minutes then go back and brush on your paint. If that is the right consistancy it should begin to crackle almost immediately. Your glue base should be tacky, not too wet or dry when you apply top coat of paint. Be sure to go over the glue base in one diorection and do not go over it but once. How do I make homemade paint crackle glaze from white glue?

What is an easy way to remove the weathered crackle glaze/paint?

I was wondering what is an easy way to remove this kind of paint. Can you recommend a good product for removing this? Something with low odor because it is on kitchen cabinets and they cannot be removed to work on them outside.

    Thanks so much!! : )

JWhat is an easy way to remove the weathered crackle glaze/paint?
yeah - theres essentially no easy way to do this.

Youre options are these: heat gun, chemical stripper, sanding.

The usual answer is scrape, then chemical strip and sand as needed for tougher areas. Then prime as needed and topcoat.

I cannot see how it is possible that the cabinet doors ';cannot be removed'; - this is most definately not the case. They were installed - therefore, they can be removed. But in case youre right, well... youve got a mess no matter how you deal with it.

I would go with the chemical stripper. Is messy, it burns like hell. the fumes are dangerous - Id still do that. Its better than creating a dust storm in you r home. heat gun is just as bad if not worse - plus you'll still need to sand.

Get further assistance from a local paint store that is a PAINT store (not Sears) - something like Sherwin Williams.

How to make spray paint crackle?

So i want to paint this metal sculpture i made. i want a base coat of gold and a green crackle paint on top so that the gold shows underneath. how can i do this with spray paint? or any other way?How to make spray paint crackle?
They sell the spray paint in kits that do that and the instructions are on the cans. How to make spray paint crackle?
prime the metal a couple of times with a can of grey primer, let dry good. now paint the piece with the gold in an oil base product and let it dry completely. Finish with the green in a water bourne paint. dilute the latex just a little. water will not stick to oil and thats why it seperates. try a little section to see for yourself. been doing it for years with excellent results. works on anything, wood ,metal, concrete,
This happens because the top coat dries faster than the paint underneath. Your best bet is to find the kits or paint designed to do this, like the stuff that the first person mentioned. Otherwise, you can try to experiment by using a fan to blow across the paint to dry the top layer fast.
try on a test board first.

    gold -let it dry

make a mixture of carpenters white glue and thin a bit with water so you can brush it. Brush it over the gold - let dry

green paint MUST be latex and paint on a single stroke with the brush. Wait till it dries. It should have crackled.

After this crackling dries I would give it a coat of clear to protect everything(especially from fingernails)

    done like borscht
I remember having crackle nail polish. I believe they have the specific spray paint that just does it. I would say Home Depot or Menard's would have it in the paint section.

  • What is the easiest way to remove crackle paint?

    Here are precise instructions.

    How to Strip a Surface

Semi-paste remover works great for thick, clear finishes such as paint. Liquid removers are used for cleaning up the residues left from the semi-paste and for thin clear finishes. Always wear rubber gloves, safety glasses and long sleeved pants and shirt.

Start with semi-paste remover and cover the surface. Allow the remover to set 5 to 20 minutes. Remember remover is your friend and allow the remover to do the work for you. The most common mistake is not using enough remover. Lay on enough remover till the surface stays wet. When the remover has bubbled the finish, remove it with a spatula. Then remove the remainder with OO steel wool, rubbing with the grain. Next, cover the surface with liquid remover. Scrub with the grain again with OO steel wool till clean. Repeat the above procedure till clean. Finally, use a paper towel dipped in liquid remover to wipe the surface dry.

Remover contains wax to keep it from evaporating. If the wax is left on wood it will cause adhesion problems with the finish. Mix up some TSP (Tri-sodium phosphate), wash the surface and allow to dry thoroughly. Sand with fine sandpaper. You are now ready to finish the item. What is the easiest way to remove crackle paint?

Can I put crackle paint on a cheap wardrobe I bought from WalMart?

You can, but you have to know the construction of the wardrobe to do it. If it is pressed wood or MDF with no veneer, the process is a little easier. If it is melamine over MDF (more common) you have to first rough up the surface, then use a stain blocking primer so that your base coat adheres well and you can use the crackle medium and top coat without worrying about flaking, peeling and bubbling. Can I put crackle paint on a cheap wardrobe I bought from WalMart?
Those often have a pretty slick finish, so make sure to get some fine grit sandpaper and sand it first. Use tack cloth to remove any grit before you apply the paint. Can I put crackle paint on a cheap wardrobe I bought from WalMart?
Sure, why not? Sand the surface to roughen up the varnish first or the paint probably won't stick.

You are correct that you have to remove it. Any water-based paint put on to will likely cause it to crackle again. There are many new paint stripper products out there now that are fume-free or low odor. Ask your local big box paint dept. for suggestions.

Start with a wire brush and elbow grease. If that's not working, try some paint remover in an area that you cant' see. If it works well, use that. I keep seeing ads for that ';ready strip'; stuff on tv. I dunno if it works, but I'd like to try it.

Has anyone ever used crackle paint before?

I want to paint my room using crackle paint but my mom doesn't want to because she isn't sure how hard it is to paint over after I move out. Has anyone ever used it then painted over it that could share their testimony?Has anyone ever used crackle paint before?
I have used crackle paint on funiture and on walls. Depending on how thickly applied, it is not that difficult to paint over. If you want big thick cracks revealing the basecoat, you apply the topcoat in a very thick covering. That is a little more difficult to ';cover up'; with paint later, but it simply requires two thick primer coats to do with something like Zinsser or Bin, both of which are thick bodied primers. If you have fine line crackles, it is very easy to cover sometimes with just latex rolled over it.Has anyone ever used crackle paint before?
    Never heard of crackle paint
Your Mom is one smart Mama... I always use my own u-rine instead.
unless you're painting on wood, it will probably not work well. The crackle base coat must be smooth in order for the top coat to crackle.

In any event, i'd guess it would be difficult to paint over due to the texture of the paint when it dries. You'd have to sand it very well and possibly fill it. could be a big mess.

Sorry man, sounds like you're hosed. Anything with texture cannot be painted over without the texture coming through. You will have to sand the whole wall down, sandblast, or cover it up with wallpaper. Find out the manufacturer of the crackle paint and call or go online to speak to a representative from the company. They might be able to tell you how to fix it. Or talk to a paint guy at Ace Hdwe, Menard's, Home Depot, or Lowe's. Lots of luck!!!
Generally when people want to paint over a crackle finish they want to return it to a smooth paint finish. To achieve this you would have to sand or chemically strip the coating down and then prime and paint.
